How many people actually watched Gurren Lagann? I enjoyed the series a lot, is it just that when an anime series ends it's popularity dies?

I watched 4 or 5 episodes but couldn't really get into it. Popularity dies after it ends because there's no more hype and talking about the next episode to come out. Except for Full Metal Alchemist, seems everybody is just nuts about that show lol
