Yeah intel is pretty pricey mainly because they have no competition. Intel's put off a lot less heat and run a lot faster, plus they have there overclock ability.
This card here Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K - Newegg.com for 230, which may be the one you were talking about is a mid range cpu for Intel, but it's faster than any AMD cpu on the market atm. It's the best CPU at the movement as far as price for performance goes. Easily over clockable to 4.3 Ghz without having to increase the voltage, just need an after market cooler.

Still though, for gaming it won't make a huge difference. If you're on a budget, it's best to get a decent cheap CPU and over clock, then pump out the extra cash for the graphics card. Very few games depend on heavily on your CPU.
