Personally, I think windows 7 is better, but you're gonna have a tough time finding a gaming laptop for around $500. Gaming laptops are harder to come by because games generally require more CPU and GPU power than most low end laptops can provide.
With that said, Newegg actually has a gaming laptop section. Here is a quick search for them: Gaming, Gaming Laptops, Gaming Laptops, New, $500 - $750, $750 - $1000 - Newegg.com
As you can see, the lower end gaming laptops are around $700. There is a $479 one but that's with MIR and reviews are pretty average.
